Measured Progress

At Pavey Angus, our breeding objective has never been about chasing a single number or producing cattle at the extremes.

Our aim is straightforward: breed functional Angus cattle that perform in commercial conditions, combining growth, fertility, structure, temperament and carcase quality in a balanced animal.

The latest Angus Australia genetic reports for Pavey Angus provide an opportunity to measure how the program is progressing — and, importantly, identify where we need to keep improving.

The Direction Is Clear

The results show that Pavey Angus has made significant genetic progress, particularly for growth and performance.

Across recent generations, we are now seeing individual Pavey animals ranking strongly within the Angus population for important growth and carcase traits.

That is encouraging, but it also changes the challenge in front of us.

We are reaching a point where simply producing more growth is no longer the objective. The focus increasingly becomes how efficiently and functionally that growth is produced.

That means maintaining strong early and finishing performance while placing greater selection pressure on mature cow size, fertility, carcase quality, temperament and structural soundness.

Growth Without Chasing Extremes

One of the clearest messages from the genetic analysis is the strength of growth being generated within the herd.

That is an important commercial trait. Kilograms of saleable beef matter.

But there is another side to the equation.

Increasing growth can also increase mature cow weight, and bigger cows require more feed simply to maintain themselves.

For Pavey Angus, the objective isn't to breed the biggest cow.

It is to breed a productive, efficient cow capable of raising a heavy calf, getting back in calf and remaining functional in the herd for many years.

Consequently, mature cow weight will receive increasing attention as we make future breeding decisions.

Carcase Quality Is the Next Opportunity

The reports also reinforce an area we have already identified within the breeding program: carcase quality — particularly Eye Muscle Area and marbling — provides an opportunity for further improvement.

Rather than sacrificing the growth already established within the herd, our aim is to combine it with stronger carcase performance.

This will influence both the females we retain and the outside genetics we introduce.

The goal is not maximum performance in every individual trait.

It is balance.

An animal that combines growth, moderate mature size, fertility, sound structure, temperament and eating quality is considerably more valuable to us than one that simply sits at the extreme for a handful of EBVs.

Better Information Means Better Decisions

Genetic progress also depends on the quality of the information behind the numbers.

The Angus Australia DataCheck report provides an independent assessment of the performance information being submitted from the Pavey Angus herd.

It confirms areas where our recording is strong while also identifying opportunities to collect additional information — particularly mature cow measurements and other traits that will increase the accuracy of future genetic evaluation.

That matters because we want our breeding decisions to be based on measured performance rather than assumption.

Genomics, performance recording, structural assessment, fertility testing and temperament evaluation all contribute different pieces of information.

None replaces the need to actually look at the animal.

Becoming More Selective

Perhaps the most encouraging outcome from the latest analysis is that the genetic base of the Pavey Angus herd is becoming strong enough for us to apply greater selection pressure.

The question is increasingly changing from:

"How do we create more performance?"

to:

"Which animals combine that performance in the most functional and commercially useful package?"

That is an important step in the development of the program.

It means being prepared to reject animals with impressive headline figures when the overall balance isn't right, while identifying and multiplying females and sire lines that consistently deliver the combination of traits we're seeking.

Transparency Matters

We believe cattle producers should be able to see the information behind a breeding program rather than simply being told that genetic progress is being made.

For that reason, we are publishing our latest Angus Australia Genetic Benchmarking Report, DataCheck Report and Herd EBV Report on the Pavey Angus Genetics page.

They provide considerably more detail than we can reasonably cover in a news article and allow anyone interested in the program to examine the information for themselves.

There will always be areas where we can improve — and that's exactly the point of measuring them.
